NIHR Participates in Regional Course on Promoting Economic, Social and Cultural Rights
The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), represented by Mohammed Ahmed Al-Najjar, Head of the Legal Affairs Department at the General Secretariat, took part in the regional training course on “Promoting Economic, Social and Cultural Rights through Budget Monitoring, Analysis and Accountability,” held in Cairo, Arab Republic of Egypt, over two consecutive days.
The course focused on reviewing the international mechanisms and standards related to economic, social and cultural rights, as well as the obligations of State Parties under the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. It also addressed monitoring and analysis methodologies, avenues for accountability, and the justiciability of these rights. In addition, the course included a practical demonstration of the methodology for monitoring and analyzing national budgets in relation to economic, social and cultural rights.
This specialized training course was organized by the Arab Network of National Human Rights Institutions, in cooperation with the United Nations Human Rights Training and Documentation Centre for South-West Asia and the Arab Region, the Economic, Social and Cultural Rights Section of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, and the National Council for Human Rights in the Arab Republic of Egypt. The event witnessed broad participation from several national human rights institutions in the Arab region, along with representatives of civil society organizations and experts specialized in this field.
